The term Holistic comes from the Greek word Holis
which means complete, total or entire. Therefore, the holistic approach
treats the whole person.
This approach takes into
consideration physical, emotional, spiritual, economic and social aspects of
one’s life and how they impact for good or bad. It also considers one’s own
ability to cope with any illness or imbalance in the body.
Enviroment
Man has been put on this
planet to enjoy life. We are affected by the environment: herbs, flowers and
their smell, sunshine and beauty. Even our sense of touch and the presence of
animals can have a positive healing and balancing effect on the body, mind
and spirit.
Mind
The mind is very powerful and
can effect our wellbeing. It is now believed that 8
out of 10 illnesses are stress-related. It stands to reason then that our
health can be adversely effected by our emotions.
Anger, jealousy, envy, feelings of worthlessness, of hopelessness, of resentment
can all cause us to become physically sick. Where negative emotions have a
negative effect, likewise positive emotions effect in a positive way.
Healing
Healing the whole person takes
into consideration the lifestyle, attitudes, environment and diet of the
person. The therapist can't cure but can aid the person to recovery, if they
so wish…but they need to be willing
to help themselves.
Responsibility
Getting to know one’s body is
very important the body tells one what it needs.
Either ignore it and press on - forward and downward - until the body
shuts down or
get in tune with the body and listen to it.
Being positive and pleasant is
important to our own well being. It is
part of our responsibility to ourselves and those around us.
